Product Description
This product offers teachers everything you will need to teach spelling for the entire school year! Thirty word lists are offered, each containing twenty words per week, for a grand total of 600 spelling words over the course of the school year. This product was designed for third graders, but can be used in second or fourth grade classrooms as well.

Teachers may decide to give students each activity separately, or as a packet at the beginning of the week. Activities may be completed during class time, or assigned as homework.

The activities featured in this spelling curriculum were designed to encourage independence and autonomy. The word lists can easily be adjusted for lower level learners by highlighting targeted words. For example, some students may complete all 20 of their spelling words, while some students may focus on only 10 words.

Monday – Rainbow Words
Students will use either colored pencils or crayons to write their words in a variety of colors. Some students like to write whole words using different colors, while other students like to make each individual letter a different color. Teachers may choose to ask students to write their words in print, in cursive, or in a combination of the two.

Tuesday – Word Sort or Pattern Activities
These activities are designed to help students notice the patterns in their spelling words. Some weeks, students will sort their words by vowel sound (long a/e), or by pattern (ou/ow, sion/tion). Some weeks will require students to draw pictures to represent their words (homophones or plurals/possessives).

Wednesday – Word Shape Boxes
Word shapes are designed to help students visualize their spelling words. As students fill their spelling words into the boxes, they are required to slow down and analyze each word letter by letter. The final product helps students gain an overall visual image of their spelling word.

Thursday – Spelling Sentences
Students will write their spelling words in sentences to help build vocabulary and practice using context clues. Each spelling word should be highlighted in the sentence to draw attention to the spelling word.

Each week offers an extra practice sheet that allows students to practice writing their spelling words in alphabetical order. Teachers may choose to have students write the words in cursive or in print. This page can be assigned as extra practice or given to allow students to earn extra credit.
