Third Grade D. .E. W. (Drop Everything & Write) Year Long Writing Booklet Records Students Monthly on Topic Writing, Provides Grade Level Rubric and Data Recording Sheets.

Resource Prep: Choose cover you would like for D. E. W. book and print it on cardstock or regular copy paper (you could use colored paper with the black and white copy provided). Booklets include cover, plain piece of cardstock or copy paper for back cover and the monthly pages are inserted between the two covers. Either staple or bind the booklet pages together at the end of the school year.

Copy the writing sheet for the month on regular copy paper making sure you write in the year before copying. If you are using one of the extra writing sheets you will need to write in the month and year. Keep a folder of each student’s writing pieces for each month and assemble D.E.W book at the end of the year.

Copy the grade level writing rubric each month, one rubric per student on regular copy paper. Copy one set of the classroom data sheets per year on regular copy paper.

Special Idea: Each month our school has a D.E.W. day on a chosen topic. Our principal gets on the PA and tells everyone it is D.E.W. time. She tells the students the topics and discusses what they could write about, she may even share a poem or quote about the topic. Each grade level writes about the topic all at the same time(if they are in specials , students do it when they return to class). We would collect these writing pieces and choose one to highlight in the school wide showcase for the month. All student papers are looked at by our principal and then we filed the papers each month to keep until the end of the school year.

✎ D. E. W. Classroom Data Collection Charts: 2 Different Styles: 1 With Monthly Pieces Labeled & 1 Unlabeled Sheet

Resource Directions:

My D. E. W. Booklet Cover: Have students put their names on and draw a picture of themselves in the rectangle of the book cover you have chosen. This can be done at any time during the school year, whatever works with your schedule and how you keep your student writing pieces together.

Monthly D. E. W. Student Pages: Each student is given the monthly writing sheet at a given time during each month. As a whole group you may discuss what the topic is and ideas about what to write about.

Students write about the topic chosen for 30 minutes. (Kindergarten may choose to do less time, especially at the beginning of the year). After 30 minutes of writing, students can illustrate their story with the box made available to them.

Collect student’s writing to evaluate and take data information. Keep monthly writing pieces in student’s folder to collect all year. At the end of the school year put student writing pieces in a booklet to send home so parents can see how their child’s writing has progressed throughout the year.

Extra D. E. W. Student Pages: Extra student sheets and topic are provided and the same procedure as above can be used with these sheets.

Grade Level Writing Rubric: Use the grade level rubric to evaluate your students writing, one sheet per student each month.

A couple times during the school year and at the very end of the year have your students look at their writing pieces and do a self evaluation on how they feel they have progress in their writing from the beginning of the year and make goals on what they feel they need to improve upon. You can use this rubric for student’s self evaluation and goal setting.

D. E. W. Classroom Data Collection Charts: Each month on the data sheets provided, record how many words students would attempt to write (fluency of writing) and their score on the grade level writing rubric. This data show you how each students writing is progressing through the year and is a good discussion topic with parents at conferences.

Kids have some writing fun while writing about their monthly topics throughout the school year!
