Each day the students do 5 questions and they are gone over. A full year of the warm-ups will be available.
Each week is a spiral review of grade 4, 5, 6, 7 skills. COMMON CORE ALIGNED
Each skill is covered in spiraling manner. Skills covered in quarter 3 are in the following categories:
Parts of Speech/Language: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, linking verbs, pronouns, reflexive and intensive pronouns, conjunctions, linking verbs, verb tense
Writing and Grammar: Writing a sentence, editing, types of sentences, subjects, verbs, predicates, comma use, punctuation, simple/complete subjects, fragment and complete sentences.
Word Work: synonym/antonyms, analogies (types of analogies), homophones, multiple meaning words, spelling, context clues, root/prefixes/suffixes, comparative/superlative forms
Poetic elements, limericks, haiku
To identify and analyze figurative language= Alliteration, onomatopeia, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, idioms
Reference Materials: thesaurus use, dictionary use, almanac
Reading Strategies: main idea in fiction and nf, inference, summarizing
Fiction: theme, characterization, point of view, sequence
NF (informational): Text structures/organizational patterns (compare and contrast, sequence, chronological, cause and effect, problem and solution, generalization, description), Text features, fact and opinion, author’s purpose.
Each skill is taught in a gradual release model= meaning the skill begins with a definition and then gradually moves from easier to more challenging/higher order use of the skill and strategy.
