Create a Real Estate Advertisement or Commercial

After researching the climate, geography, economy, religion and government of the colonies, your students will assume the role of a real estate agent. They can work on their own or collaboratively to convince homebuyers to move to their chosen region. Your students can create a commercial that would be on TV or an advertisement that would be found in a magazine or newspaper. The product includes a brief introduction, six requirements, five advertising strategies and two rubrics, along with a template and planning guide.

Student Talk Show: Founders of British Colonies

This project is a favorite among students! Your students will work in groups of four to plan and present the talk show. The student talk show will include the host and three guests. One student will represent the host and the three remaining students should each choose to represent a founder of the British colonies. During the talk show, students will discuss major features of their colonies, including government, religion, the economy and geography. Your students will improve upon skills such as public speaking, collaboration, writing and research. The product includes a brief introduction, a detailed explanation of the structure of the talk show, a rubric and a list of 10 sample host questions to help give your students ideas.

Create Currency to Represent the Daily Life of Colonists

The year is 1700 and your students have just been hired as an artisan to create currency that reflects the culture, achievements and daily life of the British colonies. This is a great project where students can work individually or with a partner to incorporate historical evidence and creativity. The project includes a combination of writing, designs and illustrations. The product includes a direction sheet with detailed requirements, a rubric, a two-page chart about the U.S. Dollar and a teacher answer key.

This project gives students the opportunity to delve deep into many aspects of life in the colonies during the beginning of the 18th century. As journalists, the task of your students is to capture the major issues and events of the era. While there is a lot of room for creativity and an opportunity for originality, students will base their information on historical evidence. The product comes with a detailed explanation of each component required in the newspaper, a detailed rubric and 12 newspaper templates. Students will include the following components in their newspaper: title, two news stories, editorial, interview, advertisement, Dear Abby and obituary.

Founders of British Colonies Projects: Movie Trailer, Scrapbook, Farewell Speech, Illustrated Epic Poem

Your students can choose to create a movie trailer, scrapbook, farewell speech or illustrated epic poem to show off what they learned about a founder of a British colony. Each project choice comes with an introduction and a description of requirements. My students absolutely loved completing this project since they had choice and room for creativity. I loved assigning this project since they incorporated historical evidence and practiced their critical thinking skills. The product includes an explanation and list of requirements for each project and four rubrics.

Founder of a British Colony: Design Book Jacket of His or Her Biography

One of the best ways to learn about historical figures is by reading biographies. Your students are going to design the biography book jacket of a founder of a British colony. In doing so, they'll show off what they learned about his achievements, accomplishments and shortcomings. A book jacket includes the front cover, spine and back cover of the book. This is a project that gives your students the opportunity to be creative, but their writing must be based on historical evidence. The product includes an explanation and list of specific requirements and topics and a rubric.

Write an "I Am" Poem About Life in British Colonies"

Students assume the role of a colonist who lives in the British colonies in the beginning of the 18th century. They'll write about a poem about the daily life and culture of the colonies by following a specific "I Am" template. Create a Board Game

This project is a really fun and creative way for students to show off what they learned about the original colonies. Students will create the rules and directions for the game, create the required pieces, and create a colorful and detailed board game.
