This unit is designed to be used in correlation with the Fifth Grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies United States History textbook.
Each section is broken down using pages 158-215 from the textbook. This unit was taught whole group during reading and students worked on the center handouts during social studies time. Each lesson started out by reading the pages that go along with each chapter and completing cornel notes as a class. The Cornell notes provided in this unit were used to ensure the students got the correct information, but the students copied the typed cornel notes from the smart board into their S.S. journals (It is a lot of writing so depending on the level of your students you might need to shorten them) I also printed copies for my students with special needs and they glued them into their notebooks and drew images next to the notes as we went along and highlighted important words to help them remember. Then students would work in groups and complete the center activity pages. There are some activities scattered throughout the unit as well.
