This I Believe is an international organization that encourages people to share their experiences and beliefs about the world. People from all over the world write 500-600 word essays describing their core values and the experiences that have formed these values. These essays have been converted into podcasts, shared online, and published in anthologies.
It’s time for your class to create their own anthology. What values do they hold? How have their experiences differed? What makes your class community different? This short essay assignment will allow you to challenge your students to think critically about their lives, reflecting on the significance of experiences. Your students will practice reflective and expressive writing while also demonstrating an understanding of symbolism.
This prompt is one of our favorite writing assignments of the year. Not only do we go beyond the surface of getting to know our students, but it also allows us to reflect on ourselves as educators and as humans. Historically, we have assigned this prompt during the first few days of school. It has provided us an opportunity for a meaningful
“Get to Know You” activity while also gauging student ability. Plus, it never hurts to get students writing during week one so that you set the stage for the rest of the year!
