This was always one of my favorite patriotic songs when I was younger. I think even as a kid I had a preference for upbeat folk music and this song definitely fits the bill
Originally written and recorded by Woody Guthrie in 1940, the story behind this song is that Guthrie was tired of hearing "God Bless America", calling it complacent and unrealistic all the time and wrote his own song based off of "God Bless America", altering the lyrics and using the gospel tune to "Oh My Loving Brother". I always enjoy teaching my students the story behind a song to give them more understanding of why people write songs.
This PowerPoint like many of my other sing-alongs is animated to support students reading and going line by line to learn the song. There are some wonderful metaphors and descriptive language that I like to decode with my older students.
In terms of instrumental accompaniments, there are many instrumental versions of this song on iTunes.
