For years I have experimented with many different ways to incorporate current events, historical events, writing and discussion into my sophomore level World History class. This assignment requires that students practice their research skills in finding and citing evidence, writing skills in elaborating on the historical event, analysis in making connections with other events or trends in history, and discussion when presenting these events to their classmates. Ideally I would assign this work on a Friday to be due the following Monday or on Monday to be due that Friday. You have the flexibility to require a discussion, brief presentation, or just simply the written assignment, and you can vary these requirements throughout the year. For those of you looking to have your students be explorers and researchers and if your students enjoy having a choice in what they focus on, this resource will be great for your students as it is for mine.
Included in this resource is: a description for teachers, an assignment handout for students, a full written example.
