Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father and president of the United States. This article takes kids on a short journey through Thomas Jefferson's life. It covers his birth in Virginia in 1743 and through his childhood and early education. Jefferson grew up in the home of a privileged family. He learned to play the violin, had private tutors, and read a copious number of books. He went to college at 17 and became one of the best lawyers in the American colonies. Although very quiet, Jefferson was a great thinker. His main skill was writing. He writings on government and politics were particularly profound. Jefferson was chosen to attend Congress to share his ideas. He became friends with John Adams - who was just the opposite of Jefferson being loud and forceful. Adams immediately suggest that Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson went on to write other important documents which became part of the Constitution. George Washington saw Jefferson's amazing talent and asked him to serve under his presidency as Secretary of State. Although Jefferson's ideas of government differed greatly from many of the other leaders, he was eventually elected as the 3rd president of the United States.
