This lesson focused on chapters 1-2 of the novel only. It lists the characters that are introduced and a few terms to know, to help with the understanding of the novel.
The setting is described, briefly.
Then, focusing on chapters 1 & 2 only, important quotes are listed. Each quote is identified as its importance as far as: foreshadowing, historical context, culture, metaphor, etc.
Then the lesson ends with 10 questions for the students to answer that is based on the above information.
I discuss the top section and then have the students answer the questions to make sure they were listening and more importantly have learned the main ideas I want them to know as they start the novel.
They then keep the assignment for future reference.
I use this with college prep 9th graders.
