This is a lit log for Three Pennies by Melanie Crowder.
This book is mostly a realistic fiction about foster care, family life, and adoption. However, there are also short chapters about a Confucius-quoting owl and the development of an earthquake.
The main focus skill of the lit log is to use text to explain/draw inferences. Other skills are: determine theme/summarize; use text to determine meaning of words/phrases; describe/compare/contrast characters, setting, events; and describe point of view.
This lit log could be used as a guide for discussion with middle graders for direct reading instruction (as in a novel study, guided reading instruction, or a literature circle) or for a read aloud. It could also be used as a guide for professional development for adults. Only certain questions will be relevant for professional development.
