Some kids (and adults!) can't get over that terrible feeling of 'brain block' when embarking upon a new story! These 'scary' (but poorly written) stories give students a chance to practice adding great details, "showing" sentences, and interesting adjectives without having to worry about "What should I write about?" : )
The story text is coded to prompt students to:
* Change the title and lead sentence
* "Prove It" by adding sights, smells, sounds, etc.
* Replace "dead" words with lively, colorful ones
* Focus in on interesting details--those little additions that help make stories come to life
You'll be amazed what your students come up with when guided gently in this no-pressure writing activity! Less "blocked" students are welcome to elaborate on the plot. My students have made some seriously scary stories based on these so-so ones!
