In this lab, students are tasked with building a simple circuit, then comparing it to a series circuit, to identify the differences.
They are then asked to build a parallel circuit, again, looking at the differences between the types.
In my class, we learn about the types of circuits first, then use the lab as a way to test our notes.
Throughout the lab, students are asked to make simple observations, then use their notes to explain WHY they're seeing what they're seeing.
I also sell a companion video to go along with this, which has me walking through the lab, and providing a step-by-step explanation. This can be used either for teacher prep, or student make-up.
Materials Required: Miniature bulbs + sockets, alligator clips or wire, and appropriate sized cells/batteries (make certain the voltage of your power source does not grossly exceed the bulb rating)
