The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books to teach, but I find that students lose interest in the beginning chapters because they do not get to "meet" Gatsby until later. After reading Chapter 1, I had students complete this creative/artistic project. Plan to give students at least 30 minutes to read the closing lines of Chapter one and put themselves into both Nick's shoes and then Gatsby's shoes to depict what these characters see through their eyes. It is surprising to see how much students struggle to visualize what Gatsby sees, but if they accurately depict the scene, their non-linguistic representation obviously reveals a very important symbol in the novel.
