This 31-page unit focuses on both expository reading comprehension and the civil rights movement. It is geared toward approximately the 5th through 8th grade. The strategies are designed so that all learners can benefit, especially students with adequate decoding skills but weak comprehension. This unit was written by a reading specialist who is also certified to teach social studies. The book Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges resembles a textbook in that it contains headings, photos with captions, separate text boxes with newspaper articles, court records, quotations, and other text. The text has rich concepts and vocabulary. The reading strategies that are listed below:
