This PDF is a visually-pleasing graphic organizer (with answer key) that helps students chart the various changes (real or perceived) in Doris Lessing's short story "Through The Tunnel". With the cheeky title "It's Morphing Time", students are engaged to think about the changes over the course of the story in Jerry's attitudes towards the beach, the bay, Jerry's relationship with his mom and the tunnel itself. Finally, it asks students to synthesize this information to determine what the tunnel symbolizes.
Have students read the story (or read it with them), and ask them to annotate, highlight or take notes specifically about these four areas: the description of the beach, the description of the bay, Jerry's relationship with his mom and Jerry's thoughts and feelings about the tunnel. After reading, this organizer will help them identify the shifts in perception.
This is a great sub plan for "Through the Tunnel", and can easily be graded by a teacher's assistant.
