1) The PDF of the poem Thumbprint by Eve Merriam. This poem is an extended metaphor poem, it is 1 stanza long, but 20 lines. It is comparing the poet's fingerprint to the uniqueness of her life and the how her own unique qualities are what him/her have a special impact on the world.
2) A literal vs. figurative interpretation chart for the students to break down and analyze. (You can do this as a class, in groups, or individual). I usually model how to do it with a smaller, short 5 line poem then have them do this as an "I do" activity.
3) A combination of 10 multiple choice and short answer comprehension and analysis questions. They ask about multiple types of figurative language (metaphor and alliteration), theme, symbolism, poetic structure, summary, and literal vs. figurative meaning.
4) A short answer writing response template for students to respond to the poem.
It is a great poem that uses extended metaphors to connect to a deeper meaning!
