In this SMART notebook file, the teacher will click on the link on each page, and a recorded solfege pattern played on the piano (in the key of E+) will sound. Students simply show you which pattern they hear by giving you a thumbs up or down! A nice, easy informal assessment to see quickly who "has it"!
This file contains both levels 1 and 2. Level 1 uses only so and mi, in the rhythms of ta and ti-ti. Level 2 simply adds on the note la.
I will be posting the next two levels (3= la-so-mi-re-do, and 4=full scale) soon! But they'll both be larger and in their own individual files.
Having the sound files recorded like this also makes it an ideal activity to leave with a non-musical supply teacher who isn't comfortable singing those solfege patterns for the class. (There is an attached answer key in a PDF in the paperclip attachments tab for their convenience!)
You could also use this as a singing activity, having your students sing both patterns together as a group (make sure you give them a reference for the key of E+ first) BEFORE you play the recorded clip. Of course this makes it a whole lot easier for them to pick out the correct pattern, so I wouldn't do this for every slide, but maybe just for the first couple of times until their inner hearing gets better!
Also attached is an assessment pdf page where you can have your students circle the correct thumb for each pattern and you can use it as a written assessment piece.
If you do not have a SMARTboard in your classroom, you can still view and use this file in your classroom by downloading the free SMART notebook viewer from here:
