In this download, you will receive:

Wall & Journal Posters: There are two different posters you can choose from to print and display on your bulletin board. Both posters are also included with blank spots for students to take notes and make their own posters if desired.

Ask & Answer Questions: Give this page to students BEFORE they read the nonfiction passage that is included about Thurgood Marshall. This is a great way to set up the purpose of reading for meaning and activate background knowledge and discussion.

Thurgood Marshall Nonfiction Passage: Have students read this article (or read it aloud to them). Students can use close reading annotations to record their thinking as they read. This passage also comes in two other versions for you to choose from: mini-version designed to fit in student compostion books, and a mini-book foldable so students can have their own personal mini-book.

Reading Comprehension Questions w/ Answer Key: You can use these pages to assess students’ comprehension after reading the passage, or you can do it together as a class to review and summarize the information. These questions can also be answered after reading the mini-book (included)

Timeline: There are two versions of the timeline for you to choose from. One is a graphic organizer students write on and one involves cutting and gluing. All of the dates and events on the timelines can be found clearly in the passage included.

Character Traits Graphic Organizer: In each box, students can write a word that describes a character trait that Thurgood Marshall displayed. Students can also include an example of how he displayed this trait in the box.

Visual Literacy Directions for Teachers: This page explains how to use the historical photograph and graphic organizers included in this product. You can also use any other photograph of your choice if you would like to integrate more visual literacy lessons into your teaching.

Visual Literacy Picture: This photograph is to be shared with students during the visual literacy lesson.

Visual Literacy Graphic Organizer: Choose one of these graphic organizers to use with your students as they look closely at the photograph. These organizers will help to guide their thinking and be a starting point for collaborative discussions.

QR Research Codes: Students can be given this page in conjunction with a device to be connected to kid-friendly web information about Thurgood Marshall. I often just print 5 of these pages and tape them around the room for students to scan. This is a great activity to have posted for "early finishers".

QR Code New Learning Notes: Students can use this page to record the new facts they learned about Thurgood Marshall while exploring a QR code. This will help to keep them accountable for their learning.

Vocabulary Flip Book: Use this flip book template to teach the important vocabulary words you want your students to master during your unit on Thurgood Marshall.

Writing Publishing Paper: Use this paper with any writing activity you have your students do about Thurgood Marshall.

PebbleGo Graphic Organizer: This graphic organizer can be used by students to take notes when they explore the biography of Thurgood Marshall on PebbleGo. Once they fill in the graphic organizer, I have my students use the publishing paper (included) to write what they learned about him in their own words.

Vocab Bulletin Board Cards: Add these cards to your bulletin board about Thurgood Marshall.

Close Reading Poster & Text for Close Reading about Brown v. Board of Education: The poster includes a suggestion for completing a close read about the Brown v. Board case using the text (included). These steps can be completed all on one day or multiple days, depending on your students’ needs. After students have completed the close read, they will be prepared to answer the constructed response question.

Constructed Response Question & Graphic Organizer: The constructed response question comes with a graphic organizer for students to organize their thinking before answering in writing. I have also included an example of a quality constructed response answer.

Vocabulary Splash Coloring Page: This is a fun way to review the important vocabulary words the students have learned about Thurgood Marshall!

Jeopardy PowerPoint Review Game: This is a fun Jeopardy game full of questions about Thurgood Marshall. It’s great to use for review right before students test over the material- my kids never realize they are learning when we play Jeopardy!
