This is a set of 3 tic-tac-toe boards that can be used with any novel reading. These boards are made to support differentiation in the classroom. I have designed them at various levels of difficulty to accommodate students' a variety of reading abilities. They are "coded" on the top with different shapes. The basic level board is a star, the average board is a diamond and the challenging or above average board is a triangle.
When I use them, I group students according to their reading ability and they work together on the boards once a week (usually Friday) after we have read and discussed the novel. I copy the boards onto different colored paper so it is easy for me to align the groups to a color. Each week, I instruct the groups to select one item from the horizontal row to complete (week one, 15 pt.; week two, 20 pt.; and week three, 30 pt.). The 30 point assignments usually take more than one class period to complete.
OTHER OPTIONS: Assign the boards individually, use them as project activities, as extra credit, or as challenging work for students who finish early. You can regroup students throughout the year and reuse the boards for a different novel.
My students really enjoyed working with these boards!
