In this activity, students explore the relationship between tide height and the phase of the moon. Students use real time data from online tide charts and moon phase calendars to collect data. They look for patterns in the data and write an argument using the claim, evidence, reasoning format to explain how the moon phase affects the height of the tides. Students will then read a passage about tides to complete their reasoning section of the argument to explain why the phase of the moon affects tide height.
You can have all students work on data for the current month, or you can assign students different months during the year to see that the pattern is true throughout the year.
There is a presentation and a set of student data sheets included in the activity. The presentation helps keep students focused on the right part of the activity. I print out copies of the readings and procedures for the different activities. I put them in sheet protectors or laminate them so I can use them from class to class and year to year.
