Vocabulary knowledge is a critical skill required for student success across academic disciplines. Vocabulary knowledge in the early grades is an indicator of later reading comprehension and often sets apart high and low achieving students.
This resource is designed to be a part of a speech-language pathologist, classroom teacher, or special education teacher’s systematic vocabulary instruction. Words selected for this resource are Tier 2 Vocabulary Words.
These context clues worksheets are designed to teach students the strategy of using context clues to determine the meaning of words and deepen vocabulary knowledge. Have students complete the self-assessment and continue expanding their knowledge of words they are less comfortable with through systematic vocabulary instruction by completing vocabulary logs
and Power Flower or Fun Suns as appropriate to accompany the content you are covering in the classroom. Together, these activities include the following evidence based strategies for vocabulary instruction:
Using context clues as a strategy to determine the meaning of unknown words
Putting definitions into your own words
Creating semantic networks including synonyms, antonyms, root words, other forms of the word, examples, and related words.
Using vocabulary words in new sentences
Drawing a picture (nonlinguistic representation) of the word
