About the Checklists
This checklist was created to help students understand what is expected when they are speaking and/or writing with others. The checklists have three dimensions (parts) and three proficiency levels (Reaching, Bridging, and Expanding).
The three dimensions are:
Discourse (Discussion) Dimension – discourse in the writing checklist is a long talk or a piece of writing. This dimension is focused on how connected and detailed the writing and conversation is to the topic. Another part of this dimension is having the appropriate register in conversations and/or writing. Different scenarios and people require different registers. In other words how formal or informal is your speaking and/or writing. It is key that students understand that talking to a friend may require a different register (informal), whereas having discussion with the principal may require a formal register.
Sentence Dimension - This dimension in the writing checklist describes the forms of language in a students speaking and writing. In the sentence dimension the sentences patterns need to be varied, detailed, complex, and fluid.
Word/Phrase Dimension - The word/phrase dimension in the writing checklist describes the vocabulary usage in speaking and writing. Students need to use specific and appropriate words in context.
