The following five-page study guide on Tillie Olsen's "I Stand Here Ironing" includes an anticipation guide on page one, comprehension questions on pages two, three, and four, and discussion questions on page five. The anticipation guide prepares students for the story and theme-related topics of discussion posed in the short story. The anticipation guide features "before" statements that students will write whether they agree or disagree with each statement and explain why. Students are asked to complete the "after" statements after they have reflected on the work.
The comprehension questions on pages two, three, and four have a few low level comprehension questions on story (e.g. What was Emily like as a baby?), but many questions are higher level, critical thinking questions (e.g. What is the setting?
