Olsen's story is one of the seminal works in modern feminist literature. My handout analyzes its plot, particularly the stages in Emily's development, its mother-daughter theme, its symbolism, the importance of its settings, and the point of view used in the story. The handout, which has blanks that your students can fill in, may be used as a homework assignment or an in-class activity, particularly one in which students divide into small groups to discuss appropriate answer(s) to the blanks with you passing among them providing help when requested. An answer key is provided on a separate page at the end of the handout. Prepared by Professor William Tarvin, Ph.D., who has published many articles on literature in scholarly journals.
