Subject: Math, Measurement
Grade Level: 3 rd , 4 th , 5 th , 6 th
Resource Type: Activity, Visual Aid, Enrichment
This is a part I of IV-part activity
that teaches students to find elapsed time with the help of a paper calculator that students can assemble themselves.
In part I, students use the time ruler as a visual aid for conversion of time given in hours and minutes into minutes only, and vice versa.
In parts II and III, students use a simplified “slide rule” to add and subtract time.
In Part IV, students solve word problems to add and subtract time, and to find elapsed time.
In Parts I, II, and III, each task is differentiated: there is a worksheet where minutes are counted by 10, a worksheet where minutes are counted by 5, and a worksheet where minutes are counted by 1.
Only the problems where one has to “go over an hour” when adding or subtracting are included.
This activity addresses the New York State Common Core Standard 3.MD.1
Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
