This lesson is designed to give the students opportunities to conceptualize the vast distances involved in Astronomy, what role the speed of light plays with information in the Universe, and the time/velocity difficulties with interstellar travel. The lesson was intended to be a fast-paces primer for deeper discussions on the topics. The lesson consists of one full-group discussion and four small group activities.
This lesson has proven a big hit in our Earth & Space Science class. It easily fills a 90-minute block, but I have extended it over two days due to the high level of group discussion and the seemingly never-ending questions. The students really stretch their time and distance comprehension with this lesson.
