Time to Hour and Half Hour
These lessons would probably be used for First Grade, but could be great for RTI or remediation. In teaching First Graders how to tell time, I used the following format:
“How Time Flies” PowerPoint or YouTube video @ https://youtu.be/dkSGe2sm-cc . This video can be paused and reversed if necessary to help facilitate understanding by your students. It emphasizes that “THE HOUR HAND IS SHORT.” The first portion gives a basic introduction to telling time using the analog clock. The second portion explains how the hour and minute function on a clock. It proceeds to give First Graders experience in seeing and telling time as it progresses through the hours and half hours from 12:00 and on around the clock and back to 12:00. Feel free to view and use this YouTube video.
The second lesson included having students draw the hour and half hour times on the clock faces. Students really have a difficult time grasping the concept that the Hour Hand really is SHORT. Having them draw the hour and minute hands, commenting frequently on how cute their short little hour hands are, helps.
The third lesson is where students move towards independently telling and writing time with the worksheets provided. At this point, it is time for fine-tuning and practice which the worksheets should provide. The IH/WH cards provide a great practice tool where students can work alone, in cooperative groups, or as a whole class.
Using Judy clocks and other concrete tools to supplement these lessons will help as well.
