Do you have students or children who engage in various disruptive behaviors in order to get attention? Time-In (TI) is considered an antecedent management that provides attention for general, appropriate behavior. TI was defined as the attention a child receives in the form of verbal praise, smiles, and appropriate physical contact contingent upon generally appropriate behavior. TI is designed to provide a child with an enriched environment through the delivery of reinforcement for appropriate behavior. TI can be delivered verbally or physically. Verbal TI includes statements such as “I like the way you are sitting quietly.” and “Good job doing your homework.” Physical TI includes light pats on the hand, arm, shoulder, or head. Researchers have shown that providing verbal and/or physical TI to a child prior to presenting the child a command increases compliance levels. It is important, when delivering praise to children for generally appropriate behavior, to use behavior specific praise that identifies the student’s specific desirable behavior. This type of praise has been most effective in promoting appropriate behavior. The use of behavior-specific praise has
also been correlated to on-task behavior. Specifically, as the use of behavior-specific praise increased in a classroom of children with emotional and behavior disorders, on-task behavior also increased.
