Although English language learners often benefit from group work, encouraging them to work cooperatively is sometimes a challenge. Some English language learners are reluctant to work in groups or pairs because the school system they came from emphasized and encouraged individual accomplishments. In fact, in many Eastern cultures, the students are seated in rows for individual work, and group work is extremely rare. You may also find that when y9ou assign group work, the English language learners gravitate to the same group of students because they are comfortable working with them. This makes it difficult to vary groups and allow students to get to know everyone in the class. To ensure that the students have an opportunity to work with a varied group of students, consider using the clock template provided in this packet.
