My students really enjoy reading through Time for Kids each week. I found many opportunities to incorporate some reading and writing using this magazine in my classroom. This particular activity asks students to cut out a picture, graph, visual, etc. from the magazine and then to summarize their learning from this article. It provides students the choice to pick something that speaks to them and then to practice the skill of summarizing. I also teach my students about plagiarism and they practice writing without copying the article.
This ready-to-go hand-out takes very little explanation and it can be used often to encourage reading comprehension!
The preview is only showing part of this hand-out and part of the directions. It includes lines for students to write their summary.
