In this activity, students will complete a graphic organizer timeline to help them reflect on previous conflict in American history revolving around states rights and the federal government. Beginning with the addition of the 10th amendment (ratified in 1791), students will detail and explain each event of conflict, ending with the Nullification Crisis of the Jacksonian era. This will allow students to further understand the development and impact of sectionalism, ideas of states rights, and eventually, will help students understand these major concepts as they pertain to the Civil War.
