Learning the multiplication facts can be a daunting experience. This chart is designed to help motivate students to learn their times tables. The student’s name is written in the space between the Shotokan Dan Rankings and the times table chart.
As the student competently demonstrates their understanding of each times tables, they achieve a coloured ribbon. A hole punch can be used to make holes at the base of each times tables so the ribbon can be fastened to it.
For the 11 times tables, two, three, four or five different coloured ribbons can be fastened to the hole. When the student achieves a competent knowledge of the 12 and 13 multiplication facts, a tassel is to be attached.
To be a master, I select any multiplication fact at random. In effect the student needs to know all the multiplication facts on the chart. The student needs to achieve 100 percent, in a short amount of time, to earn the right to be master.
Once the student has achieved a competent knowledge of the times tables to the 5’s, then to the 10’s, then to the 12’s and then to the 13’s, they receive a small gift.
I included the 13’s multiplication facts so students can choose a mental strategy to work out the answer. Here are two mental strategy examples students may choose.
1. Go to the 12 times tables then add on. For instance: 13 x 3 = 12 x 3 + 3 = 39
2. 13 x 3 = 10 x 3 + 3 x 3 = 30 + 9 = 39
If you don’t want to use the chart with the 13’s multiplication facts, I have included a chart that contains the 12’s multiplication facts.
1 times tables (white ribbon) 2 times tables (pink ribbon
3 times tables (yellow ribbon) 4 times tables (orange ribbon)
5 times tables (green ribbon) 6 times tables (purple ribbon)
7 times tables (blue ribbon) 8 times tables (red ribbon)
9 times tables (brown ribbon) 10 times tables (black ribbon)
11 times tables (choose up to 5 different colours joined together)
12 times tables (marone tassel or another colour)
13 times tables (black tassel or another colour)
Once a student has become a master, I take a photo of them holding their chart completed with ribbons and tassels, and display it in the classroom. Students take their completed achievement chart home to celebrate their achievement.
