This novel unit is intended to check comprehension of and facilitate critical thinking for the novel "Tintin in America" by Herge. The novel unit breaks the story down into three sections (~20 pages of the novel per section of the unit). Each section contains activities for
*Before Reading (activating schemata to set up main ideas for the coming pages, adventure genre)
*Words to Know (a glossary of words needed specifically for this text)
*Words to Learn (vocabulary development; students use context from the story to determine meaning then complete a crossword puzzle to reinforce understanding; 8-10 words per section)
*Story Elements (protagonist/antagonist, setting, conflict)
*Comprehension Questions (9-10 questions for each section)
*Remembering the Story (tying in to the story elements feature)
There are also two extension activities at the end of novel unit (book review and character interview).
