These interactive notebook activities are a fun way to help your students understand the central idea and development of details as well as author’s style via the informational texts “A Night to Remember,” “On the Titanic, Defined by What They Wore” and the documentary “Titanic at 100: Mystery Solved.” Through the repetition of analyzing text for two main standards, students can eventually master these two essential standard, as well as be exposed to several articles about the same topic. Additionally, there is a writing opportunity to cite text evidence and use new vocabulary. Filled with Titanic inspired illustrations and step-by-step directions, these activities are specifically designed to enhance the Nonfiction Titanic selections from HMH Collections Grade 6.
Common core-based lesson plans, rubrics and keys are all included as well as easy to cut pieces that save time. Every teacher has their own preference for notebook types. So, I have decided to design as a full 8 ½”X 11” inch page, which can be reduced on a copier by 75% to fit composition notebooks but would require trimming. I usually print off two pages per sheet on the copier and then cut in half, so I only have 1 cut and it fits perfectly into the composition book.
THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
There are many activities for two of the articles to choose from for, “A Night to Remember” and “On the Titanic, Defined by What They Wore.”
During Reading Notes
For guided note taking and support as well as encouraging independent writing, these activities help students to understand understand non-fiction articles about the Titanic disaster.
Author’s Style Notes and Organizers
Author’s style notes go with the Level Up activity in the Teacher’s Resources online textbook from HMH: Artist's Style
Students have the chance to use the author’s style organizer for as many articles as you want to assign. A Venn diagram allows students to compare/contrast “A Night to Remember” with James Cameron’s documentary.
Writing to Explain Performance Task
Outline helps students to learn how to include text evidence and thoroughly explain their answers to the text-dependent question. Fun writing paper provided with clip art featuring the RMS Titanic.
Standards-based rubric included for the writing assignment, which allows students to understand what they have accomplished or need to revise to improve their writing. I usually allow students to revise if they receive a 2 or lower (for me a 2 is a C) for a higher score (or grade).

ORGANIZATION OF INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK MATERIALS:
In this resource, you will find a variety of Interactive Notebook activities that will support your students’ understanding of the HMH Collections textbook.
Lessons Pages are the TEACHER input pages that are designed to be used as the right-hand side pages of the notebook. However, you can use them anyway you want. These lessons coincide with the lessons in the textbook that appear after every selection, however, they are recreated as an engaging guided notetaking activity with fun illustrations. Keys are provided for these resources, unless students are supposed to come up with the ideas as a class.
Activity Pages are the STUDENT output pages that are designed to be used on the left-hand side pages of the notebook. These often include writing, drawing, graphic organizers, etc. Rubrics for all writing assignments are included.
