This works well as a visual and kinesthetic starter or discussion activity on the Titanic and to give a sense of the numbers that died. There are 30 cards, so enough for one each, maybe one or 2 pairs if a bigger class.
Each student gets a ticket. On the ticket it states the name of the passenger (real names from the passenger list) and their class of travel, including crew. There is a teacher information sheet included, which explains who died/survived and the percentages of each class that survived or died. The sheet also has a little bit of info on some of the passengers. You could get students to group themselves by class and who they think survived / died etc. and explain why, before revealing the facts. They could then discuss why they think this is the case.
You could alternatively turn this into a maths calculation if you would like to add a numeracy element, where they work out the percentages from the numbers.
