This is a story loosely based on Titanic aimed at teenagers or adult learners. It was used for upper-intermediate ESL students and adult learners in Thailand.
It is an interactive cloze passage (gap fill) exercise in the form of an internet web page. It is an .htm file. If you open the file as normal (double click, or right click 'open') it will open in your default web browser. If you want to open it in an internet browser of your choice, right click it and use 'open with...'
Make sure ActiveX control is enabled in your web browser. You can check it works before buying by downloading the Preview File which is the first paragraph or so of the story with a few blanks for you, so that you can test functionality and compatibility.
This exercise will work on interactive whiteboards (e.g. SmartBoard). The file can be used in class or emailed to students.
There are 'help' and 'hint' buttons too if the blanks are too difficult to guess straight away - but you lose score the more you use these. A score % is calculated and is shown each time you click on 'Check'.
The vocabulary that is being practiced is as follows:
- Getting on my nerves
- in the way
- no way!
- pretty (as in pretty big, pretty good)
- look out
- don't look at me
- out of order (He was out of order)
- I could do without...
- I've got a better idea
- who would have thought...
- and so on
- it just shows
The story is over 350 words in length and includes 18 gaps.
I hope it is helpful to you.
