This 11-page bilingual book features Tito Goes to the Zoo by Gloria Rojas, a simple, repetitive, predictable, reader. This is a story about a chihuahua named Tito. Tito is very sad because doesn’t recognize his own gifts and talents. Instead, he compares himself to all of the animals at the zoo until finally he realizes that he does have his own gifts and talents. There is an English version as well as a Spanish version of this book. This file contains the English version. This book will support your study of zoo animals as well as the ability to answer “why” questions. If your target for the month is a zoo theme, this is a good addition.

• Pages 4-13: Predictable Reader: Tito Goes to the Zoo by Gloria Rojas, a simple, repetitive, predictable, reader. This is a story about a chihuahua named Tito. Tito is very sad because doesn’t recognize his own gifts and talents. Instead, he compares himself to all of the animals at the zoo until finally he realizes that he does have his own gifts and talents.
• Pages 14-16: Story Elements: Story Symbols introduces story elements to pre-k students (http://decal.ga.gov/Prek/OffToAGoodStart.aspx). A second Story Symbols version is included, specific to Tito Goes to the Zoo.
• Page 17: Spin a Question: Target questions include: Who was in the story? What happened in the story? Where did the story take place? When did the story happen? How did the story end? Why did the story end this way?
• Pages 18-19: ”Why” Question Mat: If students struggle with answering questions, refer to the “why” question mat and review that “why” questions require a reason when responding and we use signal words (e.g., to, so, because) when responding to a “why” question.
• Pages 20-28: Game board, “Why” question cards: Print and laminate “why” question mat and game board. Begin at Start. Using a die, move around the board. When landing on a space, answer a “why” question. First to “Finish” wins! (56 cards)
• Pages 29-32: Story Retelling/Sequence Cards: Print, laminate, and cut each of the items for story props (pages 28-31). Attach magnet to each item. Students can take turns acting out and then sequencing the story on the cookie sheet using the zoo story mat provided. They may need to refer to the book in order to sequence the events. The teacher can focus on having the students answer “why” questions.
