Use this engaging PPT while teaching online over Zoom or other virtual platform. Take students slide by slide stopping often to check understanding.
Don‘t be fooled by the cute graphics. They will keep even older students engaged. This PPT is appropriate through high school.
This PPT uses the acronym D.O.C.T.O.R. for SER and P.L.A.C.E. for ESTAR as a reference, student get to decide whether a sentence with the verb "to be" should use SER or ESTAR in this 27 page PPT presentation.
There are two examples of each:
The sample sentences in this PowerPoint are purposely in English to remove an extra layer of complexity and focus solely on the task - choosing SER or ESTAR and understanding why. (See Spanish Version Below)
This activity is great for students who are brand new to the concept of SER vs. ESTAR or for students who are confused and need to take a step back and regroup before they are able to do this in Spanish.
If you would like this PowerPoint with the sentences in Spanish for students to not only choose between the two verbs but also to conjugate, please see
I use both of these PowerPoints with dry-erase boards in my classroom to quickly assess students' understanding. You can have students raise SER or ESTAR index cards for each slide if you don't have dry erase boards. This can also be a competitive game (I use buzzers) where teams try to be the first to come up with the correct answer.
With the exception of the SER and ESTAR posters in the document, this PPT is completely editable for your convenience. You can change the sample sentences, the images, the arrows, etc. as you please.
*In this PowerPoint I use the sentence "We are crazy". It could take either SER or ESTAR based on the intended meaning of the speaker. I listed it as SER, but you can change it if you'd prefer. This makes a good teachable moment about the nuances of SER vs. ESTAR.
I used my popular SER and ESTAR Posters in this PPT. If you would like a classroom set of your own, please see the following links:
>SER and ESTAR Poster - This poster includes the conjugations of both verbs.
