I am very excited about this product and I truly hope that you find it helpful. In this product, There are a total of 30 questions which ask students to determine whether the given lines (through different representations) are:

✔ Parallel Lines
✔ Perpendicular Lines
✔ Neither parallel nor perpendicular lines

In this activity the students are divided into 5 different groups.

☛ Group 1: Questions are in Slope-Intercept Form
☛ Group 2: Questions are in Standard Form
☛ Group 3: Questions are given interms of 2 points
☛ Group 4: Questions are given using table of values
☛ Group 5: (my favorite) questions are given using mixed representations

Students would need to identify the slope of the questions and determine the relationship.

A Student Recording Sheet is provided. Additionally, the answer key is provided.

This activity available in this file in two different formats:

✎ PDF
✎ Smart Notebook (could utilize the smartboard)


Students could work on the attached PDF file as groups, pairs, individually, or as a homework.

Here are some options to working with this activity that I hope you like

✱ Drag and Drop (use Smartnotebook):

If a smart notebook software is available with a smartboard, then, a student will come up to the board to utilize the infinite cloner available with the smart notebook software and drag and drop the appropriate match to its example. The answer key is provided at the end.

♛ Group Handout (use PDF):

As indicated, this file is also attached as a PDF just in case you don't have the smart notebook software. In this case, I will seat the students in groups or stations (centers) and ask them to answer the questions on the attached recording sheets. By cooperative learning, students will have a better understanding of this concept.

✂ Cut and Past (use PDF):

Another option is to have the terms "Parallel, Perpendicular, Neither" cut on cards and students will have to place the cards over the representation.

✏ Dry/Erase Board (use PDF):

Another idea is to pass the small "Dry Erase Boards" if available. Then, the teacher will show the representation on the board and ask students to write "Parallel, Perpendicular, or Neither" on their individual board and raise it up. This will give you a quick check over this concept.

✍ Use Communicators (use PDF):

Finally, if you have access to communicators, you could insert a copy of this handout into the communicator and student would need to write the answers on the communicator.

Also, you may use this file (all or some) as "to do now" If you have smart notebook, you may drag a page or so from this file to your main file and make it part of your lesson.

Please keep in mind that If you do not have a Smartboard, you can still use this product by using Smart Notebook Interactive Viewer. This program is a free download from www.smarttech.com.

P.S. If you wish to print this file from the Smart Notebook software, I would recommend printing it using the full page option.

If you wish to print as a "PDF" file, you could either print each page separate or print multiple pages together utilizing the PDF print menu.
