Before reading Jack London's "To Build a Fire," have students complete this anticipation guide to help them recognize the struggles the man faces.
In the past, this story always used to put my students to sleep. I came up with this anticipation guide, and my students really got into it. They even stayed awake for the story! It allows them to connect with the man and imitate the difficulties of starting a fire with cold, frostbitten hands. Through a couple different simple written cues, students must work without the use of their fingers and/or hands.
