I have spent about 4 years perfecting this packet which guides my freshmen through their first literary analysis. The assignment is very structured with a planning guide that serves as an outline for organizing a 5 paragraph analysis of a character or characters from To Kill A Mockingbird.
Students start with a QUOTE TRACKER (included) to record quotes and page numbers about or by that character during/after reading. I actually make the tracking sheet optional because some students prefer using sticky notes instead.
The PLANNING GUIDE is a way for students to organize their thoughts and give their paper structure. You will receive a reproducible blank planning guide as well as an EXAMPLE of a completed planning guide.
There is also an EXAMPLE of a completed Character Analysis over the character of Boo Radley which is in MLA format (which I require). I find that it helps students visualize what I'm expecting of them.
As a bonus I've included a Margin & Type Check that can be printed and used to quickly check whether students have used 12 point, Times New Roman type and have margins set correctly at 1” which are required for MLA.
Finally you will find a SCORING GUIDE that has columns for Peer Edit and Rough Draft checks. I actually score the rough draft then give the paper back with the scoring guide to make their revisions. I require them to turn their rough draft and scoring guide back in and then all I have to do is check the things that needed work. It works great for me, but you might prefer to use the Peer Edit and Rough Draft columns as checklists instead. Also, I don't always use the Peer Edit column. It depends on the students/class that is doing the analysis.
The packet is in PDF form and is Student-Tested and Teacher-Tweaked!
