This highly engaging, period-long, and fast-paced activity promotes collaboration between five students and serves as a useful review of major concepts in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Assigned topics may include chapter reviews, character analysis (Jem, Scout, Boo, and Atticus, for instance), theme exploration (say, a different theme in each quadrant and students are then tasked with finding evidence of that theme), etc.
PRO TIP: Give the class about two minutes to secure their four appointments, then get them settled into their usual seats. On your mark, have them hustle to their first appointment (the 12 to 3 quadrant) and brainstorm/write for 5 to 7 minutes (length of appointments should be dependent on length of class, sustained activity from the pairs, overall class ability, etc.). Having a timer projected onto a screen with a "bell" marking the end of time is recommended. Have students hustle to their second appointment, then repeat the process. Depending on how much time is left at the end of the period, you could have the kids share their brainstorms with the whole group. (I score the clock out of 20 points, with five points per quadrant, deducting points for incomplete work, but also awarding bonus points for quadrants that went above and beyond the mandatory 10 items.)
