I've noticed a recent influx of audio versions of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird on Youtube. Even Sissy Spacek has a version. That's great. Use the free resources all you can.
The problem is that meek women with fake or even semi-fake Southern or Black accents are pretty much just sad. Don't make your students sad.
I worked with Bill, an actor who brings passion to this novel, maybe because he's African American or maybe because he's a better voice actor than others who have recorded the text.. My best experiences teaching any novel were when I or my students could feel passionate. The audio links in this download will provide that.
When I was reading another novel, I gave the students a choice of the reader to listen to. One class chose me over the one voice actor, but it's nice to have that choice. Are you better than Sissy? Are you better than Bill? We all know the kids aren't.
Anyhow, if you want to try it for yourself, practice on "Why I Live at the PO" by Eudora Welty. If you can nail that voice, you have a chance. If not, let Bill do his thing.
