The following handout was designed to be used in one hour long lesson in an 8th grade Reading lesson, over Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, although this assignment could easily be appropriate for 9th or 10th grade.
This lesson will practice Common Core Standards RL 8.1 and RL 8.3 while encouraging student participation and collaboration.
This is great to do early in the book (I did this after chapter 3) as a way of helping students keep characters straight. If you do this activity later in the novel then I would encourage you to change some of the characters if need be.
Through this activity, students will be put in 2 different groups—first their “character” groups (I gave students letters A-F to place them in these groups) and then in mixed character groups (I gave students from each character group a number to place them in these 2nd groups)
