After reading To Kill a Mockingbird students watch the film The Help, which contains similar themes. (You can easily change the themes I have my students use and put in themes you have focused on in your class.) They fill in the theme chart while watching the film and note examples for each theme.
Next, students use the graphic organizer to compile the strongest evidence of theme development from each work.
After the chart is complete, students use this information to write a compare-contrast essay. A prompt and outline is provided in the handout.
In this download, you will get 1. a short character list for The Help; 2. a chart for note-taking during the film; 3. a graphic organizer that requires examples from each medium; 4. a compare-contrast essay assignment that includes an outline and an online source for students to consult, if needed.
