Before we begin our reading of To Kill a Mockingbird, I like to introduce this connection journal unit. Here, students are asked to respond to each journal prompt either during or post their reading of the identified chapter. Each chapter, with the exception of a few, has its own prompt. Each prompt addresses a thematic concept from the chapter, and asks that students make a connection between their own lives and the text. I have found that this serves as a great way for students to interact with the text and make connections between the literature and the world around them.
