This script gives students the chance to act out chapters 17-19 of To Kill a Mockingbird (the trial of Tom Robinson or the courtroom scene). Last year I decided to turn these chapters into a reader's theater opportunity to change up the pace and structure of class time. Other than very minor changes (replacing some of the inappropriate language), the script reads exactly like the novel. There is one portion in chapter 17 where the narrator speaks for an especially long time, so students follow along in their book. I only print scripts for the students acting and the rest of my students follow along in their book. I transform my classroom into a makeshift courtroom with a witness stand and judge's bench.
This activity puts students in the center of their own learning, and I plan to do this for many years to come!
