For this activity students paraphrase and illustrate the chapters in the novel related to the court case. Download includes tips, student activity sheet, and rubric.
Students write a paraphrase of each chapter and illustrate their paraphrase. These paragraphs should run seamlessly into the next, creating a paraphrase of the court proceedings. They illustrate the most significant scene within that chapter that was also included in the paraphrase.
I have found that this activity allows students to explore the testimony, courtroom policies and practices, and the way others react to the testimony and courtroom practices. They can improve their comprehension as they reread and then write about the chapter.
For the most part, this activity can be completed independently – allowing you to work with students who need catching up, more help comprehending, etc.
