Prior to reading the novel, use this introductory activity to spark discussion on key issues prevalent throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. On the worksheet, students are presented with 11 statements and are asked to put a "1" if they strongly agree, a "2" if they somewhat agree, a "3" if they somewhat disagree, and a "4" if they strongly disagree. Students can work on these independently or in groups and then share out during a whole class discussion. This is also an excellent activity that can be revisited at the end of the novel to see if students have changed their minds and discuss each issue in relation to the text. Check out the preview to get a sample of the statements students will consider!
